What is the purpose of the binary sensor?

The binary sensor records the status of 4 inputs. If the On/Off status of any of the inputs has changed, this information is sent through Wi-Fi and your AP to the cloud and subsequently to your smart phone/tablet. The inputs are controlled by means of potential-free contacts.

Any sensor with a contact output (button, magnetic door sensor, thermostat, liquid level indicator, ...) can be connected to the binary sensor. The sensor is not designed for security applications.

Which type of phones is the application designed for and where it can be obtained?

The application can be downloaded at www.smart4house.net for devices with iOS and ANDROID operating systems.

Which version of the water leak detector are manufactured?

The sensor is manufactured in one version:

a) S4H-BS-0x detector with power supply from two alkaline LR6 AA size batteries (included), or from an external power source by USB micro 5VDC cable (not included)

How many sensors can be connected to a binary sensor?

The binary sensor can accommodate 1 to 4 signals. The inputs can be activated/deactivated as you wish from the application.

Where is the detector located?

The detector has to be located within the range of the AP/router (Access Point) and within 2m from the probe (cable length). The detector should be located at an accessible location for easy initialization and battery replacement. The detector has to be located in areas without condensation of water vapors with temperature 0-40°C resp. 32 - 104°F, resp. 273-313°K.

The FCC requires maintaining 20 cm distance between the detector and persons.

Which batteries can I use?

A 1.5V LR6 AA size alkaline or lithium batteries. Respect polarity of the batteries while inserting and replacing the batteries. The polarity is marked on the production label located on the removable cover.

How long can I operate the sensor without replacing the batteries?

The service life of the batteries is about 4 to 6 months depending on the frequency of transmissions (i.e. on the number of status changes and number of active inputs).

Do I have to check the conditions of batteries regularly?

No. You are continuously informed about the status of the batteries in your application in your smartphone/tablet. Should the battery voltage drop to approx. 20% of its capacity, your detector will alert you. Do not leave discharged batteries in the device.

How do I check the signal to the AP is strong enough?

On your smartphone or tablet you will find an icon showing the signal strength. Place the smartphone to the position of detector installation and you can verify the signal strength from the AP, to which the detector will be configured.

Do I need an activated SIM card to receive the information from the detector?

Not if you are within range of the Wi-Fi signal. If you want to have information outside the range, you will need a SIM with activated mobile data plan. The transmission uses the Apple Push Notification Service – APNS resp. Google Cloud messaging service.

Is this service subject to fees?

No, these services are free of charge.

How is the sensor initialized?

The installation and initialization procedure is illustrated in the instructions for use which are supplied with the sensor.

How long is the guarantee?

The dealer determines the guarantee period.

Is the data transmission from the detector secured?

The data transmission between the detector and cloud is encrypted.

What environment can the detector operate in?

The detector is designed for indoor use in the temperature range between 0-40°C resp. 32-104°F, without water vapor condensation.

Which ANDROID version is suitable for the use of this application?

The sensor is compatible with ANDROID ver. 2.3 and higher.

Which iOS versions are compatible?

The sensor is compatible with iOS version 6.0 and higher.

How does the sensor work?

The binary sensor identifies periodically the status at inputs 1 to 4. If the status of any of the active contacts changes (is closed or opened), the sensor sends a message to the cloud and notification is subsequently sent from the cloud to your smart phone/tablet. If no change has occurred during approximately 4 hours, an input status message (functionality and connection check) is sent.


IMPORTANT NOTE! Switches that contain loop break indication circuits (e.g. door contacts for some home security systems) cannot be connected to the system.

IMPORTANT NOTE! Do not apply a potential to inputs 1 to 4. The sensor may be destroyed.

Which source should I use for power supply from USB?

The detector with 2x LR6 / USB power supply is fitted with battery holders and a USB micro power supply connector. The detector can be powered only by batteries or through a USB connector, or it can be fitted with batteries and power from the USB connector. In this case, when the power supply from the ISB connector is interrupted, the detector automatically switches to battery power supply.


You can use an ordinary adapter for 230VAC with USB micro connector as power supply, if the current carrying capacity exceeds 300mA, or you can use an universal grid source with USB 2.0 connector and a cable fitted with a USB connector on one end and USB micro connector on the other. In this case the current carrying capacity of the source must exceed 300mA.

Why is the cloud technology used for Smart4house detectors and what is its significance?

The information sent from the sensors is transmitted to the cloud, where it is stored and further processed. The Smart4house application communicates with the cloud. This way the user has access to the data from any place with Internet connection. The cloud itself runs on secured and backed-up servers, significantly increasing the reliability of the solution with high flexibility.

Can I display the detector status on several Smart phones/Tablets?

It is possible. You need to install the Smart4house application for the appropriate operating system on the Smartphone. The instructions for activation are in the manual for iOS par. 3.2a, 3.2b. The instructions for activation are in the manual for ANDROID par. 3.2.

At what frequency can the sensor send signal status change information?

The sensor starts sending information the moment it recognizes a change in state from any input. The input sensing cycle is interrupted during the transmission and is restored following the transmission.
Certain APs/routers limit or do not permit repeated transmission of messages within a very short time interval. The AP setting should be checked and changed if appropriate.  Transmission frequency impacts battery life. A powered connection is recommended for high frequency transmission applications.

I do not receive notifications when connected to the WIFI network.

The WIFI setting has no impact on this functionality. Make sure that your router does not block ports TCP 443 (iOS) or TCP ports 5228, 5229, 5230 (Android) in the outgoing direction (OUTPUT).
